If you are dreaming of a maternity photo session and you wonder how to choose the right photographer for you, here are a few tips.
Check portfolio and experience
There are many photographers out there and it is easy nowadays to find someone that will match your style. Don’t assume that photographers can change their style according to your liking. The settings photographers use and light conditions affect the end result and unique style of photographer. If a photographer's style is dark and moody most probably he/she will not deliver light and airy photos.
Please check the photographer's portfolio and see if you like the colors, the way how photographers pose their clients, in what environment the photographer took pictures. Think if you prefer studio pictures or a more natural approach to photographs taken outdoors. Also consider how long a photographer is on the market and how big portfolio he/she has. Do photographers show diversity in their galleries? Do you see the same couple posing repeatedly? Believe me professionalism comes with years of experience and it will impact overall experience. Looking at photographers' websites and galleries should give you a good idea of what to expect.
Read reviews
Reviews and referrals are a great way to see if a photographer is professional and give you insight on how the session might look like. There are many ways to find reviews on line (on Google reviews or social media) and see what feedback clients left. You can also check with your friends and family if they can recommend any photographer and share their experience.
Find a specialist in the field
Depending on what type of photography you are interested in, find a photographer that is specialized in his field. There are many fields in photography and if someone is great at doing food photography doesn’t mean will be good at taking newborn pictures. The same works the opposite way. Also if someone does beautiful studio portraits doesn’t mean you can expect the same quality from outdoor sessions. The best way to find a specialist is to again check portfolio on photographer’s website (see how many photographs you find in their portfolio; do they represent a variety of poses, locations or same location and same model all the time; does the photographer provide any guidance, tips and advices for future clients for example what to wear or what is the best location for the session; etc).
Contact the photographer and discuss your concerns
Still not sure if you found the right match? Contact your photographer and simply ask questions that you do not find the answers to.
Few questions that are worth asking before hiring a photographer:
What does the package include?
Can I change outfits?
How long does it take to receive photos?
