If you would like to have a family photo session but you are scared of how your children will behave I would like to share a few tips to make a photo shoot a memorable experience for the whole family.
I am a friend with a camera
Before meeting for a photo shoot please tell your kids they will have fun in the desert/beach/park and your friend will come with a camera. Don’t mention that I am a photographer and they need to behave but rather try to let them know that we are going to spend some fun time together discovering new places. I know that a photo session is very important for you and you put lots of effort in preparation but try not to put too much pressure on your kids. They really feel our emotions so just think of our meeting as relaxed family time with a new friend.
Think of the games your children like to play
Before our photo session please think of games your children like to play. Do they like to play tag, ring around the rosie, singing songs or dancing together?
If you would like to capture natural moments your engagement in a photo shoot is very important. Be present in time and truly feel the moments you share with your closests. Fun games will help me to capture this beautiful bond you have with your children. I always give prompts to make our meeting a fun experience and capture candid moments but you know your child best!
Trust me
I already did plenty of photo sessions and I guess there is nothing I saw that could surprise me. I dare to say I saw it all and I have a baby as well so I do not expect your baby to “behave” during the whole experience. Sometimes photo shoots might seem to be a total chaos but believe me there was no session I had to cancel due to kids behavior and I always managed to capture beautiful moments. I like to call my photo shoot a child led session. We will follow your kids during the shoot and let them do what they like most. It will be a “yes” day and in case they need a break we will let them (usually during this time I am taking shots of parents only). Instead it is important that parents keep it cool and follow the fun instead of nagging children. Let the kids be kids and let them get a bit messy cause this is exactly the way to preserve authentic moments.
I had the pleasure to meet this family twice already. First we met in the desert to capture memories of expecting a new addition. Second time I was introduced to a new member of the family little Teodoras. The 3 big kids were super excited to present their new brother.
